Curious about caring for chahoua geckos? Learn everything you need to keep these fascinating, mossy little creatures happy and healthy — from habitat tips to diet must-knows!

Terrarium and Substrate requirements

Terrarium Requirements:
Chahoua geckos are arboreal, so vertical space is key. A minimum enclosure size for an adult 45x45x90 cm though 60x60x120 cm is ideal for active adults or pairs. Provide plenty of branches, cork bark, vines, and live plants to encourage climbing and hiding. .

Substrate Recommendations:
Use a substrate that holds humidity without becoming waterlogged. Great options include coconut fiber (coir), orchid bark, or a bioactive mix with leaf litter and springtails for natural waste breakdown. Avoid loose substrates with fine particles like sand, as these can cause impaction if ingested. A bioactive setup not only looks great but also supports humidity and gecko wellbeing.

Environment requirements

Lighting:
While Chahoua geckos are crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), they benefit from a natural day-night cycle.

Use a low-level UVB light (Arcadia D3 Forest or Shadedweller are perfect) to support vitamin D3 synthesis and overall wellbeing, especially in bioactive or naturalistic enclosures. Provide a 12-hour light/dark cycle year-round.

Humidity:
Maintain relative humidity between 60–80%, with daily misting in the morning and evening. A hygrometer helps you track levels accurately. The enclosure should dry out slightly between mistings to prevent mold and respiratory issues.

Include moist hiding spots like cork tubes or moss-filled hides to help with shedding and hydration.

Temperature:
Ideal daytime temperatures are 22–27°C, with a nighttime drop to around 18–22°C. Avoid excessive heat; anything over 29°C can stress or harm your gecko.

A gentle heat source isn't usually necessary if your room stays within this range, but ensure temperature gradients so your gecko can thermoregulate.

Nutrition requirments

Nutrition – Feeding Your Chahoua Gecko

Chahoua geckos are omnivores, and their diet should include a mix of commercial gecko diet (CGD), fruits, and live insects for optimal health.

Commercial Diet:
A high-quality, complete powdered gecko diet (such as Pangea, Repashy, or Nekton) should make up the foundation of their diet, offered 3–4 times per week. Rotate flavors and brands to encourage a healthy appetite and nutritional variety.

Live Insects:
Offer live insects like gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, or silkworms once or twice a week. Dust them with calcium + D3 (1–2x per week) and a multivitamin (1x per week). Insects provide enrichment and help keep your gecko active.

Fruit Treats (Optional):
Pureed fruits like banana, mango, or papaya can be offered occasionally as a treat, but should not replace the complete Gecko Diet. Avoid citrus and overly sugary fruits.

Water:
Always provide fresh, clean water in a shallow dish. Chahouas will also lick droplets from leaves and enclosure surfaces after misting.
